BEINGS

Humans | Mutants | Synths

  • Players have the option of roleplaying as humans, mutants, or synths in City of Fiends Roleplay. Humans are any human characters that could realistically exist within the real world. Mutants are humans who were born with or have manifested unusual cosmetic features, abilities, or physiologies. Synth is an umbrella classification for all beings with humanoid forms and synthetic parts. Robots, androids, and cyborgs are classified as synths.

  • If you're having trouble deciding what you'd like to play, you can easily start as a human and change later! You're welcome to roleplay dormant mutations manifesting later, upgrades to synth status, hiding your traits to be registered as a human, etc.

  • While we offer some flexibility and creative freedom in character creation, we expect balance, fairness, and consent. Overpowered (OP) characters or characters that directly violate rules are not allowed.

  • No character is completely invulnerable or invincible. A character may pretend to be indestructible as a lie, but all characters created must have vulnerabilities and mortality.

  • All beings transfer or can create their own equivalent process. NLR applies to all beings.

  • All beings can be harmed, damaged, or potentially destroyed. All characters should therefore value their lives to reasonable extents and react to the universal possibility of destruction.

  • We are a scifi/cyber city, not a fantasy realm. Many fantasy races can be adapted into science fiction mutants. We use lore rooted in futurism, technology, and science instead of magic. For example, if your character comes from a place of magic, they'd discover magic doesn't exist here and that they have changed upon entering this new universe.

  • Perception that crosses the boundaries of metagaming and godmoding is not allowed, such as detecting lies, tracking, sensing being classifications or abilities, or knowing the future. Mind control, possession, forced mind reading, and forced telepathy are not permitted.

HUMANS

Those who share characteristics of the majority of humans are classified simply as humans or baseline humans. Baseline humans are the majority and the most socially accepted being type in the city.

Humans have the potential to use technology or advancements to their benefit in place of mutations or cybernetic enhancement. For example, while a mutant may have pink eyes, humans can wear colored contacts to achieve the same effect without permanent mutation.

Humans transfer upon death unless a player chooses permadeath. They are vulnerable to injury and death without medical assistance. They age and have standard defined anatomy.

MUTANTS

Humans who were born different than the standard or who have manifested unnatural cosmetic features, abilities, or biological features via breach travel are classified as mutants.

Most character races can be given a scientific explanation and be able to exist as a subtype of mutant. From minor abnormalities to strange abilities, mutants are a broad and flexible classification within limits.

Mutants either transfer or may create their own lore explaining NLR, forgetting the lead up to their “death,” and respawning. Mutants may not be invulnerable or possess any abilities that cross into powergaming such as forced telepathy without consent from targets.

Mutants can be born mutated and come from another universe with differences in beings, become mutated through breach travel, or become mutated via other means such as experimentation. Breach travel can alter facets of your character to tweak the form they take in City of Fiends while allowing you to continue previous stories.

Because mutants are so varied and because they are not native to the world, there are no governing bodies, hierarchies, or factions for subtypes of mutants. Mutants can be inspired by media, an expansion on common definitions, or created from your own mind. No two mutants need to be alike, especially due to the possibilities of mutating differently or coming from different universes. For example, players could play sci-fi equivalents of undead, but cannot force their lore or racial guidelines onto others.

SYNTHS

Synth, short for synthetic, is an umbrella classification for all beings with humanoid forms and synthetic parts or entire bodies. This is the classification meant for cyborgs, robots, AI, etc.

Synths either have partial or completely artificial elements to them. This includes artificial enhancements or alterations to humans, totally manufactured bodies, and programmed personality or intelligence. If you want to play an android, cyborg, sentient toaster bot, or a 60-year-old with the physical ability of a twenty-something, synths may be the right choice.

Per city regulations, synths are expected to be limited to ensure they are not a threat to humans. Synths may either transfer or may create their own lore explaining NLR, forgetting the lead up to their “death,” and respawning such as being remade, reuploaded into a copy, etc. Synths may not be invulnerable or possess any abilities that cross into powergaming.

Synths can be beings who were once human, created as one of a kind, a product that is mass produced, partial humans who were altered, etc. They can be inspired by media, an expansion on common definitions, or created from your own mind. No two types of synths need follow the same lore so long as they exist within reasonable and fair limitations.
